just a thought..

Humans are actors..as Shakespeare said. So what does this mean? In the context of teaching, I think that we, as teachers, need to be able to be someone whom we are not..this is not to say that we need to be pretentious..NO! What I meant was..even though we may feel insecure..or hopeless..or nervous..we must be able to hide such feelings and portray more positive ones when we are in class. Looking at the scenario of today's classroom, I believe that there is no room for us to tremble..what more to tumble over. We need to be able to put on a mask, and put on a show.. we need to be confident! It is not an easy thing do..and I feel that I will need a lot of practice before i become a good actor in the classroom. But i believe it is something that all teachers need to be able to do. Talking about how we present ourselves to the public and to the class (specifically), another important aspect is our dressing. I do accept the fact that we have to comply to the dress code set by the ministry of education and the teacher education division..but I believe that it should not be an excuse for us to dress shabbily. I mean just because you cannot wear anything fancy like skinny jeans, it doesn't mean that you should just wear an unfit pair of trousers and a too-big-of-a-size shirt..or just wear a skirt that doesn't fit your height and a checkered blouse that makes you look like a christmas present! My point is..even though we are 'just' teachers (as most people would say), the way we present ourselves is nevertheless important. I believe that by dressing smartly, we can attract students' attention. I mean if students look at us disgustingly, how are we going to ensure that they are interested in listening to what we preach? right?? I am not saying that we should wear thomas pink's shirt or a gucci bag or a pair of Christian Louboutin's stiletto heels..NO! I mean realistically?? (duh!) We just need to dress smartly..that's it. In a way, this will help to improve the image of the teaching profession which has been negatively affected by many things in recent years. Again, i am not saying that I am a well-dressed person..no..definitely NOT. this is a reminder to myself and it is just a thought..my opinion..and I am not imposing what I think and believe to others..

You are absolutely right Farouk! I've seen few people who are soon to be teachers but don't really care about the way they present themselves in the public. We often forget that teachers don't just teach the subject, but also other simple things like self-image, self-presentation etc. Well when we talk about a hidden curriculum, this is one of the things that we, teachers, must take into consideration!

We were once students and therefore we know pretty well how students love to 'evaluate' their teachers based on their clothes, accessories, physical appearance and etc. So whether we like it or not, we might need to spend money, time and effort to ensure we look good all the times.

So future teachers, let's do a make-over! Haha..just kidding! :)

p/s: Farouk, I think you might have to prepare a note on "how to have great hair" coz' I am pretty sure some of your students will be asking you about that. Hahaha..
